Characterized by high blood glucose, diabetes is a chronic health condition, which may occur either when pancreas produces insufficient amount of insulin or when your body cannot utilize the insulin it produces.
There are two major types of diabetes – Type I and Type II. Also known as insulin-dependent or childhood-onset diabetes, the Type I occurs due to deficient insulin production in the body. The real cause of the disease is not yet known. It requires daily administration of insulin.
Also called the non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes, Type II results from inefficient use of insulin by the body. This type accounts for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes globally. It is largely the result of physical inactivity and excess body weight.
