The Reward of Deeds Depends Upon the Intentions تمام اعمال کا دارومدار نیت پر ہے
Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.
Book: Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Revelation, Hadees No. 1کو حمیدی نے یہ حدیث بیان کی، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم کو سفیان نے یہ حدیث بیان کی، وہ کہتے ہیں ہم کو یحییٰ بن سعید انصاری نے یہ حدیث بیان کی، انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھے یہ حدیث محمد بن ابراہیم تیمی سے حاصل ہوئی۔ انہوں نے اس حدیث کو علقمہ بن وقاص لیثی سے سنا، ان کا بیان ہے کہ میں نے مسجد نبوی میں منبر رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کی زبان سے سنا، وہ فرما رہے تھے کہ میں نے جناب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فرما رہے تھے کہ تمام اعمال کا دارومدار نیت پر ہے اور ہر عمل کا نتیجہ ہر انسان کو اس کی نیت کے مطابق ہی ملے گا۔ پس جس کی ہجرت ( ترک وطن ) دولت دنیا حاصل کرنے کے لیے ہو یا کسی عورت سے شادی کی غرض ہو۔ پس اس کی ہجرت ان ہی چیزوں کے لیے ہو گی جن کے حاصل کرنے کی نیت سے اس نے ہجرت کی ہے۔
Book: Sahih Bukhari, Chapter: Revelation, Hadees No. 1حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيُّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنَ وَقَّاصٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى ، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى دُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ إِلَى امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا ، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ.

No. Can a person who pulls someone’s neck tie with the intention to kill them be sued in the court of law? Yes. If the answer is ‘no’ for the first question and ‘yes’ for the second one, it means the actions are being judged based on intentions. Indeed, intentions play a very important role in our routine life.
On the other hand, the Machiavellian philosophy, “The end justifies the means” propagates a related doctrine. It is very popular among the politicians. According to the proponent of this idea (Machiavelli), it is by the virtue of the morality of outcome that one’s actions are deemed right or wrong. Meanwhile, morally wrong actions are sometimes unavoidable for the achievement of morally right outcomes.
Quran and Hadith on Intention:
Both the Noble Quran and Hadith Sharif stress on virtuous intentions to make one’s deeds good ones. In Islam, the rewards are earned by hearts.The verse 225 of Surah Al-Baqarah (chapter 2) can be quoted as a reference here.
لَّا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللَّهُ بِاللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن يُؤَاخِذُكُم بِمَا كَسَبَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ (2:225)
Translation: “Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.”
Similarly, there is a Sahih Hadees on intention where the Rasool (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him) has been quoted as saying “إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ” which means “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions”. (Hadees No. 1, Chapter: Revelation, Sahih Bukhari)
